The Seneca Diabetes Foundation has established the Ruth Goode Nursing Scholarship to assist a Seneca Nation student pursuing a college or university degree in the nursing field. It is the hope of the Seneca Diabetes Foundation that the student receiving this scholarship will use his or her medical training to benefit the Seneca people.
Coming from humble beginnings, Ruth Goode was born in 1905 to a large family and was the only child to pursue higher education. She worked several jobs throughout nursing school and graduated in 1928 as an RN. Ruth led a long and industrious career spanning nearly fifty years, but perhaps what she’s best known for is her position as senior staff nurse at Lakeshore Hospital’s obstetrical wing. “Goodie” as she came to be known, was respected by doctors and staff, and trusted by patients. She adhered to the highest standard in nursing and was an asset to her profession.
The Ruth Goode Nursing Scholarship in the amount of $5,000 will be awarded to a Seneca nursing student who embodies the qualities Ruth displayed in her life and career.
