Seneca Nation of Indians
The Seneca Nation of Indians is the largest of six Native American nations comprising the Haudenosaunee or Iroquois Confederacy or Six Nations, a democratic government that pre-dates the United States Constitution.
Known as the “Great Hill People” and the “Keeper of the Western Door,” the Seneca Nation of Indians are the westernmost of the Six Nations. They have a population of over 8,000 and are the fifth-largest employer in Western New York, helping bolster the region’s and New York State’s economies.
Headquartered in Buffalo, New York—and recognized as one of the highest-ranked health insurance plans in the nation—Independent Health continuously aims to provide our community with innovative, affordable health-related products and services.
Food is Our Medicine
The Food Is Our Medicine Project is a partnership between the Seneca Nation of Indians and the Seneca Diabetes Foundation (SDF). Although independent of the Seneca Nation, the SDF works to raise money to fund Seneca Nation health, wellness and recreation programs to reduce the impact diabetes has on Seneca people of all ages.
