Seneca Diabetes Foundation Raises $250,000 with Inaugural Golf Tournament

The Seneca Diabetes Foundation (SDF) hosted its First Charity Golf Tournament at Brierwood Country Club on August 15 setting a record raising $250,000. The event brought together local celebrities, businesses and organizations to raise funds and awareness for one of the top health issues facing American Indians today.

Founded in October 2004 by Barry E. Snyder, Sr., the SDF aims to provide education outreach, raise prevention awareness and fund research to improve the lives of Seneca Nation Members and others affected by diabetes.  Fifty percent (50%) of Seneca Nation adult members have diabetes, and it is also becoming more prevalent among Seneca youth. SDF committed to raise a minimum of $250,000 in private funding its first year.

“I’m overwhelmed by the spirit of cooperation and commitment from the Nation and our community partners,” said Barry E. Snyder, Sr. Chairman, Seneca Diabetes Foundation. “We hope that our efforts will also benefit in some way the greater population, because, as we all know, disease does not distinguish between race or ethnic background.”

SDF Chairman Barry E. Snyder was the honorary chairman of the golf tournament.  The tournament was co-chaired by SDF Treasurer Maurice John, SDF Co-Chairmen Bergal Mitchell and Arnie Cooper and SDF Finance Chairman Michael R. Militello.
