Seneca Diabetes Foundation Announces 2009 Scholarship Opportunities

$30,000 available to Seneca Nation members interested in a health services career

BUFFALO, NY – The Seneca Diabetes Foundation is now accepting applications from Seneca Nation students who are pursuing a career in the fields of health or social services for the following 2009 Scholarships:

  • Barry and Deanna Snyder, Sr. Chairman’s Scholarship: $10,000 over two years with a focus on students who have experience in a leadership position.
  • Maurice and Karen John Treasurer’s Scholarship: $5,000 awarded annually to recipient who can demonstrate situations where he or she has played an integral role in a teamwork setting.
  • Seneca Gaming Corporation Scholarship: $5,000 awarded annually to a student who has shown to have a commitment to community service and volunteerism.
  • Ruth Goode Nursing Scholarship: Open only to students pursuing a degree in nursing, the recipient of this $5,000 scholarship will have demonstrated qualities that Ruth Goode embodied throughout her long and illustrious career.
  • Geraldine Memmo Scholarship: For students who have shown an interest in Seneca and/or Native American history. $5,000 will be awarded to a student who demonstrates knowledge about our peoples’ rich and diverse history.

The deadline for applications is June 16, 2008 and applicants will be notified by no later than July 31, 2008.

Scholarships winners are strongly encouraged to give back to the Seneca Nation by seeking full-time employment within the Seneca Nation of Indians Health Department upon completion of college.

Scholarships will be presented at the 4th Annual Seneca Diabetes Foundation Golf Classic on August 24th at the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel.

The mission of the Seneca Diabetes Foundation is to provide education outreach, prevention awareness and fund research to improve the lives of Seneca Nation Members and non-Native Americans affected by diabetes.
